ABOUT US

Family Enhancement first began in 1974 when a group of parents and community volunteers met to discuss ways to work cooperatively with other community organizations to emphasize and promote peer support for parents. With a small foundation grant, leaders were trained to facilitate groups of parents brought together in informal gatherings supported by Madison Urban Ministry to discuss issues of child development, family enhancement and wellness. Out of those groups, the first Parents’ Place was born.

Since 1989, Family Enhancement has been a partner in Family Centers, Inc. (FCI), a nonprofit collaborative venture of agencies that actively promotes the wellbeing of Dane County's vulnerable children and families. Through a steadfast and ongoing commitment to an alliance among four family-serving agencies, Family Centers, Inc. is able to provide families in need with complementary services while making efficient use of charitable dollars. FCI's unique co-location agreement in the Family Centers Building at 2120 Fordem Avenue in Madison, Wisconsin enables each of its agencies to play a vital role in building family strengths through services that address and alleviate family stress.

Until recently, Family Enhancement served as a key collaborator in the South Madison Health and Family Center-Harambee, where it was a founding partner. As needs have grown throughout the county, Family Enhancement has expanded geographically and programmatically but the emphasis on prevention, skill development and recognition of strengths in others to build their own networks of support to enhance family wellness has remained the same. All of the services provided by the agency help parents and others who care about children ensure that children grow up in a caring environment, enjoying their youth while developing into responsible and capable adults.

Today, Family Enhancement serves over 4500 people each year through its programs offering parenting classes, individualized parent coaching, peer support groups, Play and Learn activities for parents with their children and various workshops. Program activities take place in the Family Centers, Inc. building as well as in schools, community centers, faith-based organizations and businesses around Dane County. Family Enhancement uses evidence-based curricula in all of its programming to teach parents ways to promote school readiness, understand logical consequences and develop positive behavior management techniques that support their child’s self esteem and emotional development.
